Wood-Burning Stoves

Wood-burning stoves provide domestic heating using a traditional solid fuel combined with modern combustion and heat-distribution technologies.

This category includes modern and traditional wood stoves in different outputs, sizes, materials and configurations, including natural-convection, fan-assisted and sealed models designed for different heating requirements.

Selecting the right stove depends not only on its nominal heat output but also on room volume, building insulation, climate, heat-distribution system, chimney configuration and installation conditions.

How to choose a wood-burning stove

Before purchasing, consider:

  • nominal heat output;
  • room size and volume;
  • building insulation;
  • local climate;
  • natural or fan-assisted convection;
  • flue outlet diameter and position;
  • external combustion-air connection;
  • firebox dimensions;
  • efficiency and environmental performance;
  • compatibility with the existing chimney.

How much heat output do you need?

The heat output of a wood stove should match the actual heat requirement of the building.

A stove that is too small may not provide sufficient heat, while an oversized appliance may frequently need to operate below its optimum output.

The stated heated area or volume should therefore be considered an indicative value. Actual performance depends on building insulation, ceiling height, climate and heat loss.

Natural-convection or fan-assisted wood stove?

Natural convection

Natural-convection wood stoves distribute heat through radiation and natural air movement without electric fans.

They are particularly suitable for users looking for simple and quiet operation.

Fan-assisted heating

Fan-assisted wood stoves use one or more fans to help distribute warm air throughout the room.

Depending on the model, ventilation may be standard equipment or available as an optional kit.

Sealed wood-burning stoves

Some modern wood stoves feature a sealed combustion chamber and can draw combustion air directly from outside the building.

This can be particularly useful in modern, well-insulated homes when the complete installation is designed for this operating configuration.

Firebox materials

Wood stoves may use different materials in their combustion chamber and heat exchanger, including:

  • cast iron;
  • refractory materials or vermiculite;
  • steel;
  • combinations of different materials according to the appliance design.

No single material is universally superior: overall performance depends on the complete design and certified characteristics of the appliance.

Efficiency and wood consumption

Efficiency indicates how much of the energy contained in the fuel is converted into useful heat.

Actual wood consumption also depends on the required heat output, fuel quality and moisture content, and the way the appliance is operated.

Environmental rating

Many modern wood-burning stoves sold in Italy have an environmental performance rating under the applicable national classification system.

Different models may have different ratings, including 4-Star and 5-Star appliances.

Always check the individual product specification, particularly where regional or local rules impose minimum requirements for biomass appliances.

EcoDesign and energy class

Many current-generation models comply with the applicable EcoDesign requirements for solid-fuel local space heaters and also carry an energy-efficiency class.

Environmental classification, EcoDesign compliance and energy class are separate characteristics and should be assessed independently.

Grants and tax incentives

Certain wood-burning stoves may qualify for financial incentives or tax deductions when the appliance and installation meet the requirements of the relevant scheme.

Eligibility is not automatic for every stove in this category. Always check the specific appliance, certified performance and conditions of the applicable incentive.

Flue outlet and chimney system

Every wood-burning stove requires a correctly sized combustion-product evacuation system.

Before choosing an appliance, check:

  • flue outlet diameter;
  • top or rear outlet position;
  • chimney height and configuration;
  • required chimney draught;
  • connecting flue route;
  • bends, penetrations and external sections.

Top or rear flue outlet?

A top outlet generally allows the connecting flue to rise vertically above the appliance, while a rear outlet may be convenient where the chimney connection is already positioned in the wall.

Some stoves allow both configurations; always check the individual model specifications.

Modern, traditional and ceramic wood stoves

The range includes different styles:

  • modern wood stoves with clean lines and large glass doors;
  • traditional cast-iron stoves;
  • models with ceramic or majolica cladding;
  • stone-finished appliances;
  • compact models;
  • panoramic stoves with a wide view of the fire.

Main brands available

The range includes wood-burning stoves from specialist manufacturers such as:

  • Thermorossi;
  • Caminetti Montegrappa;
  • Moretti Design;
  • Palazzetti;
  • Jolly Mec;
  • Cadel;
  • Lincar;
  • Blinky;
  • other selected brands according to availability.

How to compare wood-burning stoves

When comparing two models, consider more than nominal output:

  • nominal heat output;
  • efficiency;
  • hourly wood consumption;
  • environmental classification;
  • energy class;
  • dimensions and weight;
  • firebox size;
  • flue outlet diameter;
  • required chimney draught;
  • natural or fan-assisted convection;
  • external combustion-air connection;
  • construction materials.

Which wood-burning stove should you buy?

The best stove is one that is correctly sized for the building and compatible with the chimney system and real installation conditions.
