Thermal Insulation Shells and Materials for Chimney Flues

Chimney insulation shells and thermal insulation materials are designed for insulating compatible flue pipes, chimney ducts and other high-temperature applications.

This category includes preformed mineral-wool and ceramic-fibre insulation shells together with flexible aluminium-faced insulation materials, available in different thicknesses, diameters and formats.

The correct product should be selected according to temperature, pipe diameter, chimney construction and actual installation conditions.

Which chimney insulation should you choose?

COPALUAluminium-faced mineral wool30 mmUp to 700°C
COPCERReinforced aluminium-faced ceramic fibre13 mmUp to 1000°C
FIBROCERALUAluminium-faced ceramic mineral fibreFlexible sheetUp to 1000°C

COPALU 30 mm mineral-wool insulation shell

De Marinis COPALU is a preformed insulation shell made from aluminium-faced mineral wool with a 30 mm insulation thickness.

It is intended for thermal insulation of compatible chimney and flue pipes and is available in a wide range of diameters.

The product specification states a temperature resistance of up to 700°C.

COPCER 13 mm ceramic-fibre insulation shell

De Marinis COPCER uses high-resistance ceramic mineral fibre with a reinforced aluminium outer facing.

Its 13 mm thickness provides a compact solution for high-temperature applications.

The product specification states resistance to temperatures up to 1000°C.

FIBROCERALU flexible insulation

FIBROCERALU is a flexible ceramic mineral-fibre insulation material with an aluminium facing.

The flexible format can be useful where a preformed shell is not suitable for the geometry of the component being insulated.

The material is supplied in a 100 × 60 cm format and is declared resistant up to 1000°C.

Why insulate a chimney flue?

Thermal insulation can help reduce heat loss through the flue wall and limit cooling of combustion gases along the chimney route.

It may be particularly useful for:

  • flues running through cold spaces;
  • technical shafts;
  • compatible metal flue pipes requiring additional insulation;
  • applications where thermal transfer to surrounding structures needs to be limited;
  • compatible refurbishment or upgrading work.

Preformed shell or flexible insulation?

A preformed insulation shell is particularly convenient for round pipes because it provides a consistent insulation thickness around the circumference.

Flexible ceramic-fibre insulation may be more practical around non-standard shapes, fittings or applications requiring the material to be cut and shaped.

Available insulation-shell diameters

COPALU and COPCER are available in nominal sizes including:

  • Ø80 mm
  • Ø100 mm
  • Ø110 mm
  • Ø120 mm
  • Ø130 mm
  • Ø140 mm
  • Ø150 mm
  • Ø160 mm
  • Ø180 mm
  • Ø200 mm
  • Ø220 mm
  • Ø250 mm
  • Ø300 mm

The correct size should be selected according to the actual external diameter of the pipe being insulated.

Mineral wool or ceramic fibre?

COPALU mineral wool uses a thicker 30 mm insulation layer and is declared suitable up to 700°C.

COPCER ceramic fibre is declared suitable up to 1000°C while using a thinner 13 mm construction.

Selection should also consider available space, pipe diameter, installation geometry and the technical requirements of the flue system.

Insulating a single-wall flue

Insulation shells may be used around compatible single-wall flue pipes where the installation design specifically allows this type of solution.

However, a single-wall pipe with added insulation is not automatically equivalent to a factory-certified insulated twin-wall chimney system.

Insulation shells vs twin-wall chimney systems

SolutionDescription
Insulation shellInsulating material applied around a compatible flue pipe
Twin-wall chimneyComplete certified chimney system with integrated insulation between inner and outer walls

Clearance from combustible materials

Adding insulation does not automatically change the certified combustible-material clearance or chimney designation.

Required clearances must always be based on the certification and technical documentation of the complete chimney system.

For example, certified systems such as ISO25 PLUS G50 have a declared combustible clearance because the complete chimney configuration has been tested and classified accordingly.

Roof and floor penetrations

Where a flue passes through timber roofs, floors, beams or other combustible structures, insulation material alone is not sufficient to define the correct penetration system.

Dedicated certified roof-penetration components may be required.

How to choose the correct chimney insulation

Before purchasing, check:

  • external pipe diameter;
  • maximum expected temperature;
  • available installation space;
  • required insulation thickness;
  • insulation material;
  • bends and fittings;
  • installation environment;
  • compatibility with the chimney system;
  • nearby combustible materials.

COPALU, COPCER or FIBROCERALU?

  • COPALU 30 mm: aluminium-faced mineral-wool shell, declared resistant up to 700°C;
  • COPCER 13 mm: reinforced aluminium-faced ceramic-fibre shell, declared resistant up to 1000°C;
  • FIBROCERALU: flexible aluminium-faced ceramic-fibre insulation for applications requiring a shapeable material.
